Ambassador of the European Union to Serbia
H.E. Andreas von Beckerath is the Ambassador of the European Union to Serbia, appointed in August 2025. A Swedish career diplomat with more than 25 years of experience, he has held senior positions across Europe and at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Before assuming his role in Belgrade, Ambassador von Beckerath served as Sweden’s Ambassador to Poland (2023), Deputy Director-General and Head of the Department for Eastern Europe and Central Asia at the MFA in Stockholm (2017–2023), and Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine (2013–2016). He also worked as Acting Head of the Department for Conflict Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs (2016), Deputy Head of Mission at the Swedish Embassy in London (2010–2013), and Political Counsellor in Berlin (2006–2010).
His early postings included assignments at the Swedish Embassies in Russia and Romania, the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and as European Correspondent at the MFA.
Ambassador von Beckerath holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Economics from Uppsala University, with studies in Business, East European Studies, and Russian Language.
Fluent in Swedish, English, and German, with working knowledge of Russian and French, he brings broad diplomatic and cultural expertise to his role. Born in Sollentuna, Sweden, in 1971, he is married with two children. His interests include sports—particularly basketball—travelling, and reading.
